Do they get a zero? ![]() Adding homework to the list is an added stressor. I really don't support copious amounts of homework for any children! Asking the children to be sure to have reading time with a friend or family member or look for a specific item to bring to school the following morning (something round or red or that rolls) or take a walk and look for certain things (a stop sign or a tree with leaves) to reinforce a concept would be the only type of acceptable homework for young learners.įamilies have so many obligatory things to do at the end of the day. Homework? I cannot imagine assigning formal homework to preschoolers. Do what works for you, your kids and your families. With more parents working and spending less time in our classrooms, we wanted to incorporate ways to connect school to home. If it's too stressful on you and the families, don't do it. If it's not developmentally appropriate, don't do it. The kids loved it! There is no consequence for not doing homework, which rarely happens. The children asked for homework! I made it a monthly family fun activity which aligned with our curriculum. The only year I did 'family homework' was the year a majority of my children had siblings in Kindergarten or first grade. I taught in a 3's/4's class for nine years. The activity which goes with each bag is simple family fun that promotes our curriculum. These bags are rotated, so a child might have the letter bag one week, then may have to wait for a turn for the animal or math bag another week. At our playbased program, our PreK classes have 'family homework' in the form of take home bags such as the 'estimation jar', 'the letter bag' for a letter of the week activity, the class stuffed animal, bringing home a book the class wrote together. ![]()
